BREA, Calif. (August 18, 1999) – Suzuki Marine has led the way in development of technologically advanced, fuel-efficient four-stroke outboards that meet both federal EPA 2006 exhaust emissions standards and the boating public’s demands for smooth, reliable power. Suzuki knows that clear air, pure water and healthy, sustainable fisheries are vital to the outdoor lifestyle that is so much a part of our American heritage.
Today’s clean-running outboard motors are a big step in the right direction. And Suzuki is working on new technology for the future that will continue this trend; giving boaters and fishermen the power they need to enjoy their sport while minimizing the impact on our lakes, rivers and oceans.
Suzuki Marine is also striving to set an example for the industry through involvement in a variety of grass-roots education, fisheries enhancement, and fund-raising efforts designed to improve our fragile marine environment. In addition, Suzuki’s involvement with the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon in San Diego has helped raise over $27 million for leukemia research over the last two years.
Following are some highlights of Suzuki’s ongoing environmental and charitable efforts:
Buy A Suzuki, Save The Salmon
In 1999, Suzuki Marine joined forces with its Pacific Northwest dealers and Northwest Chinook Recovery (NCR) to lead the fight in restoring the region’s dwindling salmon populations. NCR is a grass-roots organization that believes in action – not words – and is working hard right now to restore important salmon habitat lost to development, deforestation and natural degradation. NCR’s projects to reclaim lost spawning and rearing habitat will produce hundreds of thousands of new Coho, Spring Chinook, pink salmon, chum salmon and cutthroat trout each year.
Every time a boater in the Pacific Northwest purchases a new Suzuki outboard in 1999, they’re helping Suzuki support this valuable effort. In addition to monetary support for NCR, Suzuki is working with its dealers across the region to raise public awareness of fisheries-related issues and inform local anglers on how they can help.
Power For Southern California Ocean Research
In keeping with Suzuki’s commitment to help further the understanding of our ocean environment, Suzuki recently donated two 70 horsepower Four-Stroke EFI outboards to the California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) in the ocean front city of Long Beach, California. These fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly motors power the university’s new research vessel Callinectes, a Glacier Bay 220 catamaran.
This state-of-the-art vessel is being used for the collection and study of marine species, diving, trawling, netting and wildlife observation. There are 25 courses at the university that require this type of research, and it is a necessity to receive a Marine Biology degree from CSULB. The Callinectes has been involved in a variety of breakthrough research projects, including studies of Pacific shark species and the filming of television documentaries on local marine life.
Florida Fisheries Research/Restocking
Suzuki Marine has a long-standing relationship with the University of Miami’s Rosensteil School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (RSMAS), providing both financial support and outboard motors for the university’s fleet of research vessels.
Working with the University of Miami, Suzuki has sponsored the rearing and release of thousands of juvenile redfish into Florida’s Biscayne Bay, where overfishing, pollution and development have greatly reduced fish stocks. The university’s hatchery program is renowned worldwide for its work in hatching and raising indigenous saltwater species.
Suzuki’s "Catch a Suzuki, Release a Redfish" program raised more than fish, it helped raise awareness of important fisheries issues and the important work taking place at the University of Miami.
Suzuki Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon
Over the last two years, the Suzuki Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon has raised over $27 million for the Leukemia Society of America. Suzuki is title sponsor of this San Diego, California-based event that attracts thousands of world-class and recreational runners from every walk of life. Nearly 17,000 people participated in 1999 – some to compete for cash and prizes and others just to enjoy the unique course with 26 live rock bands playing along the route.
