August 28, 2001 (Brea, Calif.)–Defying the convention that more power must come with more weight, Suzuki has introduced its new 2002 DF140 EFI, a technologically advanced engine that weighs less than any comparable fuel-injected four-stroke or direct-injected two-stroke presently in production.

This new fuel-injected four-stroke is based on Suzuki's proven in-line four cylinder powerhead with offset driveshaft for compact size and a rigged-and-ready weight of only 410 pounds (20" shaft model, 25" shaft model weighs 421 pounds). This makes Suzuki's newest four-stroke innovation ideal for a wide variety of fresh and saltwater boats.

"This new motor is aimed right at the heart of the worldwide boating market," said Larry Vandiver, marketing director for the marine division of American Suzuki Motor Corporation." Its performance characteristics, fuel efficiency and best power to weight ratio make our 140 four-stroke a perfect match for all types of boats – from bay boats to pontoon boats, flats boats to walleye boats, even deep-vee blue-water fishing boats power catamarans," added Vandiver.

At first glance, boaters will see that Suzuki's fuel-injected 140 horsepower four-stroke is unlike any other outboard. An exclusive new engine cover design with a large air induction port provides maximum airflow for increased power. The design of this louvered port and air chamber permits smooth, quiet intake of air while helping prevent debris from entering the engine compartment.

Under the hood, the innovations continue. Performance starts with a compact inline-4 block with dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. Cylinders are bored to 86mm for total displacement of 124.7 cu. in. (2044cc). A two-stage cam drive system allows for a smaller cylinder head, as well as reduced valve angles. This contributes to a further reduction in size – and more efficient combustion.

Power is delivered from the crankshaft via a primary reduction gear and offset driveshaft located under the powerhead. Besides lowering the height of the powerhead, this system moves the engine's center of gravity forward and contributes to better balance over the transom. Second stage gear reduction in the gear case results in a 2.38:1 gear ratio. This means the DF140 can turn a larger prop (both in diameter and pitch) for awesome out-of-the-hole acceleration and exciting top-end speed. A counter rotation model will be available for twin installations on power catamarans and deep-vee fishing boats requiring two outboards.

The DF140 features Suzuki's proven multi-point sequential electronic fuel injection. This speed/density system monitors engine conditions to deliver the precise amount of fuel to each injector in sequence. In addition to greatly improved fuel efficiency and crisp performance throughout the rpm range, this system allows Suzuki to meet both the 2006 EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB) three-star, ultra-low emissions standards.

The fuel injection system is matched with a tuned, long-track intake manifold and race-proven 4-into-2-into-1 exhaust system. Air volume is increased thanks to a redesigned intake duct at the back of the cowling. A water-cooled intake manifold brings denser, cooler air to the throttle body. Long tracks contribute to improved performance and torque, especially to the mid-range. The exhaust system is cast into the block and cylinder head. It dramatically reduces drag on exiting exhaust flow for increased power and performance.

Solid-state electronic ignition assures quick and reliable starts. The engine features an electronic Idle Speed Control system and is programmed to idle smoothly at 700 rpm. A high output 40-amp alternator provides ample power for engine systems and onboard electronics.

Suzuki engineers have kept durability and reliability at the forefront of their design. Some intake air is diverted to the flywheel, which doubles as a fan to circulate air under the cowling, cooling key engine components. The DF140 is also the first four-stroke outboard to feature a bolt-on water-cooled oil cooler. Water-cooled fins absorb heat from the engine oil adding to performance and durability. Oil changes are simple to perform. The oil drain plug is easily accessible when the engine is in the tilt-up position and the oil filter is an automotive-type spin-on filter.

The DF140 runs quietly and smoothly at all throttle levels, a hallmark of all Suzuki 4-stroke outboard motors. These traits are enhanced by a larger capacity air silencer and baffle plate, and specially-designed crankshaft, crankcase, engine mounts and cowling.

A multi-function tachometer is included with every DF140. In addition to rpms, this instrument alerts the boater to engine performance irregularities. An oil- change reminder system is also built-in. A 3000-rpm neutral rev limiter protects the engine from damage caused by over-revving in neutral. And for saltwater boaters, a fresh water flush port makes it easy to flush the cooling system with a garden hose.

Suzuki's new 2002 DF140 is backed by Suzuki's enhanced three-year limited warranty that covers all key engine components for the entire three years. For more peace of mind, an optional three-year Suzuki Extended Protection Plan is also available, offering boaters a total of six years of protection.
